The Brussels Institute for Geopolitics is inviting you to save the date for an exciting afterwork conversation with Sir Nick Clegg on 6 November – the Brussels launch event for his new book How to Save the Internet: The Threat to Global Connection in the Age of AI and Political Conflict.
The fragmentation and polarisation of the internet is one of the defining social and political phenomena of our times – and few leaders are as well-equipped to bridge the gulf between Silicon Valley and European policymakers as Sir Nick Clegg, former British Deputy Prime Minister and, until early 2025, Meta’s President of Global Affairs.
During seven years in the upper echelons of Zuckerberg’s behemoth, he managed its content policy and approach to elections, taking key decisions on the suspension (and later reinstatement) of President Trump, the handling of misinformation during the pandemic, and the company’s response to Russian state media and covert operations following the invasion of Ukraine. In his new book, Sir Nick Clegg takes readers behind the scenes at Meta and his interactions with world leaders – setting out where Big Tech has gone wrong, how Silicon Valley’s insularity has blinded it to its missteps and the reforms of the global platforms that are now needed.
Cyberspace increasingly reflects the power politics of our time: American juggernauts, Chinese mass surveillance, Russian psy-ops – and Europe stuck in the middle, lacking both the platforms to compete and the tools to respond. As EU leaders grapple with questions of digital sovereignty and the power of algorithms, BIG is proud to welcome Sir Nick Clegg to Brussels and bring his unique insights to the heart of European policymaking – and you're invited to join us.
Sir Nick Clegg will be in conversation with Barbara Moens (Financial Times), followed by a Q&A and a small reception. Signed copies of the book will be available for purchase at the event.
